Kash Patel, Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, proudly spoke of his Indian origins as he took oath as the ninth director of the American intelligence agency. Patel highlighted that he is living the ‘American Dream’ — a statement that assumes significance amid deportation of hundreds of illegal Indian immigrants from US.
“I am the living the American dream, and anyone who thinks the American dream is dead, look right here. You’re talking to a first-generation Indian who is about to lead the law enforcement agency of the greatest nation on earth. That can’t happen anywhere else… I promise that there will be accountability within the FBI and outside of it," Patel said.
Kash Patel was seen taking the oath on the Bhagavad Gita, with his girlfriend and family beside him. His other family members were seated in the front row.
Earlier, at the US Senate Confirmation hearing, Patel was seen bowing down to touch his parents’ feet, a traditional gesture of respect in Hindu culture. He also greeted his parents with ‘Jai Shri Krishna’ after introducing them before a Senate Judiciary Committee.
US Deportation Of Illegal Indian Immigrants
Patel’s statement on living the American dream comes as a ray of hope for millions who migrate to the US, which is often referred to as the land of opportunities. Many, in this chase of ‘American Dream’, often resort to illegal route of landing in the country.
US President Donald Trump, who came to power after making mass deportations of undocumented immigrants a central campaign promise, began the crackdown soon after taking oath.
In this process, thousands of undocumented Indians with final orders of deportation are being sent back to India. Three US flights have landed in Amritsar in less than two weeks.
The total number of Indians being deported since Donald Trump occupied the Oval Office has reached 332. With an estimated 2.2 lakh undocumented Indians living in the US, as per an April 2024 Department of Homeland Security report, more deportations will likely follow soon.
A vlogger Aditya Tiwari, who stays in Salt Lake City in Utah, the United States, earlier spoke to News18, and urged Indians not to take the illegal ‘Dunki’ route. He is known for spreading awareness on the issue with his videos.
Giving an insight into the ‘Dunki’ routes, Tiwari claimed that there are many who offer packages to cross over illegally to the US. He said most of those who opt for such packages get arrested on the border and then seek political asylum.
