With the Election Commission announcing the assembly poll schedule for Maharashtra along with Jharkhand, there is renewed interest in the April-June Lok Sabha elections and how parties fared.

A close look at the data for the 288 assembly segments in Maharashtra during the elections for the 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state indicates that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led the race even as the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) had the upper hand against the ruling Mahayuti.

While the BJP emerged as the overall leader with an edge in 78 assembly segments, its Mahayuti ally Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena had the advantage in 40, Ajit Pawar’s ist Congress Party in 6, and the RHCP in 1. In all, the Mahayuti had the upper hand in 125 assembly segments.

The Congress was the overall runner-up behind the BJP, at 64. Its Maha Vikas Aghadi ally Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) was close behind at 57, with ist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP) leading in 33 assembly segments, while independent candidates supporting the alliance had the edge in 7. The total figure for the MVA stood at 161.

Aside from the two major alliances, Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) emerged as the leader in 2 assembly segments.

Each Lok Sabha constituency in India is subdivided into multiple assembly seats. This also means that one assembly segment can be part of only one Lok Sabha constituency.

On average, each Lok Sabha seat in India consists of around seven assembly segments. The average is six for Maharashtra. The counting of votes includes the collation of assembly-segment-wise votes polled for each candidate, which the Election Commission of India releases as Form 20.

The data in Form 20, released by the ECI, indicates which candidate was leading in which assembly segment of each Lok Sabha constituency

However, the leading candidate or party in an assembly segment is not always the same as the winning candidate or party in the Lok Sabha constituency.

Maharashtra will vote on November 20 while polling in Jharkhand will be held in two phases – November 13 and November 22. The counting of votes will be held on November 23, the Election Commission of India announced on Tuesday.
