In a tragic incident, five people were injured after a chopper of Royal Malaysia Police crashed into Sungai Pulai river in Gelang Patah on Thursday morning, authorities said.
The incident took place when the five police officials onboard the chopper AS355 were performing a ceremonial flypast as part of the MITSATOM 2025 exercises (Multilateral Nuclear Security Detection Exercise) involving Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore.
Videos of the incident showing the chopper nosediving into the river with boats seen going for rescue went viral on social media platforms.
The five police personnel rescued were admitted to a hospital with two out them reportedly in critical condition requiring respiratory assistance. The three other officers are in a stable condition and are being treated at Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA), Johor Baru, according to Bernama.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia confirmed the crash incident. It said that the helicopter with registration number 9M-PHG started from the Tanjung Kupang police station at 9:51 am with five officers on board, including the pilot.
According to the rescue team, all five crew members were evacuated and transported to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Jetty in Gelang Patah, Malay Mail reported.
There were claims of the helicopter being outdated. However, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said, “Age is not the problem; proper maintenance is key. What happened is beyond our control."
The French-made Airbus AS355N is a single-rotor craft light utility helicopter that was manufactured from 1975 to 2016.
