A man accused of killing nine people, including four of his own children, has died by suicide while in police custody in Suriname, authorities said on Monday.
The suspect, a 43-year-old man identified by the initials DA, was being held in a police station cell in the capital, Paramaribo. Police said he was found dead on Monday morning, a day after his arrest.
According to officials, the man was suspected of carrying out a violent attack late Saturday night and early Sunday in and around his home. Four of his children, aged between five and 15, were among those killed. Other victims reportedly included the children’s grandparents and another child from the neighbourhood.
Police chief Melvin Pinas said the suspect appeared to be dealing with mental health problems. Investigators believe the violence began after a dispute with his wife. Two children reportedly managed to escape and seek help from relatives nearby, but several family members who came to assist were also killed.
Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath told local radio station ABC that the man was kept under close watch after being moved from hospital to a police cell.
He said there was a short moment when officers were not present, during which the man took his own life. The minister added that more details were needed to understand how this was able to happen while the man was in custody.
Monorath also shared further information about how the attack unfolded.
He said the violence began inside the family home. Two children managed to escape and contacted their grandmother, who lived across the street.
The grandmother and grandfather went to help, but both were killed, the minister said.
The suspect then went to another house and attacked more people. Police stopped and arrested him as he was heading towards a further location.
President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons later commented on the incident in a post on Facebook.
She wrote that at a time when families and communities should support one another, the country was instead faced with a harsh and painful reality.
