Mark Carney India Visit Live Updates: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi. The Canadian PM is on an official visit to India aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between India and Canada, with discussions set to focus on trade, energy and artificial intelligence (AI).

Both Prime Ministers will hold talks on rebuilding bilateral relations, with key discussions centred on energy cooperation, trade expansion and progress on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

Carney first landed in Mumbai, where he addressed business leaders before travelling to the national capital. During his visit to Delhi, he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

In a post on X, Carney said, “Arrived in New Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Modi. Canada and India are two confident and ambitious nations who want to build boldly together. We’re forging new partnerships in energy, talent and innovation, and AI – to create greater security and prosperity for our peoples.”

Meeting focus beyond bilateral issues

Apart from bilateral matters, the two leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and global developments. They will jointly attend the India-Canada CEOs Forum, aimed at aligning government policy with private sector growth.

The visit comes as both countries attempt to normalise ties after relations sharply deteriorated in June 2023 following the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada and the diplomatic standoff that followed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday highlighted expanding cooperation between India and Canada across renewable energy, nuclear power, technology and critical minerals.

“We are pleased that Canada has decided to join the Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuel Alliance. To further our shared efforts, we will hold the India-Canada Renewable Energy and Storage Summit this year. In civil nuclear energy, we have reached a landmark deal for long-term uranium supply. We will also work together on small modular reactors and advanced reactors,” Modi said.

He described the two countries as “natural partners in technology and innovation,” adding, “With Canada and India innovation partnership, we will turn ideas into global solutions. I thank Prime Minister Carney for Canada’s valuable contribution to the success of the AI Impact Summit held in India last month. We will enhance cooperation in AI, as well as quantum, supercomputing, and semiconductors.”

Referring to agreements signed during the visit, Modi said, “The MoU signed today on critical minerals will strengthen resilience supply chains. In the space sector, we will connect startups and industries from both countries. In the energy sector, we are building a next-generation partnership, which will place special emphasis on hydrocarbons as well as renewable energy, green hydrogen, and energy storage.”
