Thousands of protestors have taken to the streets across Turkey's major cities following the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. A court charged and jailed Imamoglu pending a corruption trial, triggering the largest anti-government demonstrations in over a decade. Police have detained at least 323 individuals as protests intensify nationwide. Imamoglu, a leading figure in the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), is viewed as President Erdogan's primary political rival. His potential presidential candidacy has been jeopardized by the recent annulment of his university diploma.
