A discounted maternity dress worth $8.75 has become the centre of an unexpected online debate after US Second Lady Usha Vance mocked a New York Times fashion analysis of her outfit. Now her husband, Vice President JD Vance, has also joined in with a cheeky response.

“She bought a $50 dress for $8.75. America: meet your next director of the federal budget," the Vice President posted on X.

The debate erupted after a New York Times article examined the public appearances of pregnant and new mothers in President Donald Trump’s administration, including Usha Vance, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and Katie Miller, wife of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller.

The article by fashion critic Vanessa Friedman discussed how public displays of pregnancy by prominent figures had become linked to broader political messaging around family and fertility.

It specifically referred to Usha Vance’s appearance in an Old Navy coral maternity dress during a Father’s Day special episode of her YouTube series, "Storytime with the Second Lady", where JD Vance was the guest.

The analysis suggested that the outfit and the public embrace of pregnancy carried symbolic significance given Vance’s role in the Trump administration.

Usha Vance appeared to push back against the interpretation, turning the discussion into a social media moment.

“Now that we know the political significance of my $8.75 coral maternity dress from Old Navy, can't wait to hear what The New York Times has to say about my elastic-waistband pants and compression socks!” she wrote on X.

She also shared a screenshot of her Old Navy receipt, showing that the dress originally priced at $49.99 had been reduced through discounts and promotions to a final price of $8.75.

Reactions flooded social media, with many appreciating Usha Vance's choice, with some even praising the bargain buy.

While one social media user said, "The best part is that the dress looks beautiful, and she looks great in it," another posted, "I love a good bargain and bragging how inexpensive it is. That’s adulthood."

"Teaching Budget 101 to my grandkids. It makes me very happy to show them that SLOTUS knows how to get the most out of her money and look good doing it," a post on X read.

Meanwhile, there were still a few who preferred to continue the debate.

"JD, if that's the first time she bought a dress for a deal it must have never happened before for you to get excited enough to post on X about it. Get a grip," one person posted on X.

Another joked, "For the next storytime series I nominate an old comic book series published by the Fed that taught basic economics, starting with Once Upon a Dime."

"She should teach classes to the US government on fiscal responsibility," another social media user suggested.
