US First Lady Melania Trump is set to chair a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday, in what officials describe as a historic moment, as the United States assumes the Council’s rotating presidency.
Her office said she would “make history at the United Nations, taking the gavel as the United States assumes the Security Council Presidency to emphasise education’s role in advancing tolerance and world peace." Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, confirmed that the event would mark the first time a first lady, or first gentleman, has presided over a Security Council session.
The United States is holding the Council’s presidency for March. Melania Trump, President Donald Trump’s wife, has previously engaged in diplomatic initiatives, including efforts aimed at securing the release of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.
Her appearance comes at a time of growing political and financial friction between Washington and the United Nations. The US has long been the largest contributor to the UN budget, but tensions have risen in recent years over funding and policy disagreements.
President Trump has criticised the UN’s performance and signalled his intent to sidestep the Security Council through alternative initiatives, including the so-called “Board of Peace," which held its first meeting in Washington last month.
At that gathering, Trump reiterated his view that the UN has failed in its mission. Since returning to the White House last year, he has withdrawn US support from several major UN agencies, including the World Health Organisation.
