After Donald Trump’s historic comeback in the presidential election, Republican Representative Mike Rogers of Alabama is being considered for the role of US Secretary of Defence in the new administration, Fox News reported.
Rogers was re-elected to represent Alabama’s third Congressional District in the November 5 election, running unopposed. He has held the seat since 2002, representing the east Alabama district.
Rogers, a former FBI agent, currently serves as Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. He also served as the Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security during the 116th Congress
In addition to Rogers, the publication also reported that another Republican, Representative Mike Waltz of Florida, is being considered for the Defence Secretary position.
Waltz, a retired Guard Colonel and combat-decorated Green Beret, previously served as defence policy director for Secretaries of Defence Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates. He also advised the Bush Administration on policy, which he later implemented in the military.
He currently serves on the House Armed Services, Intelligence, and Foreign Affairs Committees.
On Tuesday, Trump secured a historic comeback to the White House, marking the start of what is set to be more than a decade of US politics shaped by his hardline, disruptive right-wing agenda.
The 78-year-old former president won by wider margins than before, despite a criminal conviction, two impeachments during his time in office, and warnings from his former chief of staff, who described him as a “fascist."
Several exit polls showed that voters’ concerns over the economy and inflation, which rose sharply under Joe Biden administration in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, appeared to play a key role in the election results.
