A White House staffer called US Security Advisor Mike Waltz “a fucking idiot" and another said that his career “should not survive" after the editor-in-chief for The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, was texted war plans for upcoming military strikes in Yemen in a group chat in a secure messaging app.
The material in the text chain “contained operational details of forthcoming strikes on Iran-backed Houthi-rebels in Yemen, including information about targets, weapons the US would be deploying, and attack sequencing," editor-in-chief Goldberg reported.
The Security Council said in a statement that it was looking into how a journalist’s number was added to the chain in the Signal group chat. In addition to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, it included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s director of national intelligence.
Goldberg said he received the Signal invitation from Mike Waltz.
“Half of them saying he’s never going to survive or shouldn’t survive," a top White House official told the Politico. Another official said Waltz should resign in order to prevent the president from being put in a “bad position".
US President Donald Trump would ultimately make the decision over the next day or two as he watches how news agencies are covering the incident.
“It was reckless not to check who was on the thread. It was reckless to be having that conversation on Signal. You can’t have recklessness as the national security adviser," another official was quoted as saying by the Politico.
“Everyone in the White House can agree on one thing: Mike Waltz is a fucking idiot," said another official while speaking to the outlet.
Another person told Politico that Waltz and Trump have had a chat and that the US President is, for now, standing by him.
“As President Trump said, the attacks on the Houthis have been highly successful and effective. President Trump continues to have the utmost confidence in his national security team, including national security adviser Mike Waltz," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a Monday statement.
