Elon Musk has said that the United States has “benefitted immensely from talented Indians" who have moved to the country. The tech billionaire made the remarks during the latest episode of Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath’s podcast, “WTF is", released on Sunday.
When asked by Kamath about the presence of Indian CEOs in Western companies, Musk said, “America has benefitted immensely from talented Indians that have come to America."
Kamath responded, noting that the trend seemed to be changing in recent times. Musk reiterated his point, adding, “America has been an immense beneficiary of talent from India."
The conversation then turned to the perception of anti-immigration sentiment in the US. Kamath asked why the narrative around immigration appeared to have shifted. Musk explained that opinions on the matter are divided, saying that under the Biden administration, there had been what he described as “a total free-for-all with like no border controls."
The Tesla CEO added that such policies had encouraged illegal immigration and created what he called “a diffusion gradient" of people coming to the US, partly driven by financial incentives and government benefits.
Musk also touched on the H-1B visa programme, noting that some of America’s stricter immigration policies had been influenced by its perceived “misuse" and the “free-for-all" approach of previous regimes.
Addressing concerns that foreign workers might take jobs from Americans, Musk said his experience suggested otherwise.
“I don’t know how real that is. My direct observation is that there’s always a scarcity of talented people. So you know, from my standpoint, I’m like we have a lot of difficulty finding enough talented people to get these difficult tasks done and so more talented people would be good," he said.
