India is preparing to send earthquake relief supplies to Myanmar on Saturday after the country’s junta chief, Min Aung Hlaing, called for international assistance following a devastating earthquake.

This announcement comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India’s readiness to help, offering support to both Myanmar and Thailand, which were hit by the powerful earthquake on Friday.

Taking to social media platform, PM Modi shared, “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone."

“India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand," Prime Minister Modi stated.

The powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand has claimed the lives of more than 150 people and injuring hundreds more. Dozens of people are still trapped under collapsed buildings, and the death toll is expected to rise.

Junta chief’s call for help

The 7.7-magnitude tremor hit northwest of the city of Sagaing in central Myanmar in the early afternoon, followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock. The quake caused widespread destruction, flattening buildings, damaging bridges, and cracking roads across Myanmar. In Thailand, a 30-storey skyscraper under construction in Bangkok was also demolished.

While the full extent of the damage is still unclear, Myanmar’s isolated leader, already grappling with a civil war, issued a rare appeal for international aid.

Min Aung Hlaing confirmed that 144 people had been killed, with 732 more injured, but cautioned that the death toll was “likely to rise." In Thailand, eight deaths have been confirmed, with more expected.

“I would like to invite any country, any organisation, or anyone in Myanmar to come and help. Thank you," he said in a televised address after visiting a hospital in Naypyidaw, the capital.
