Myanmar Earthquake LIVE Updates: India, Russia Send Humanitarian Supplies; PM Modi Speaks With Junta Chief

External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Saturday informed that an 80-member NDRF search and rescue team departed for Myanmar. India has also handed over 1500 tonnes of relief material to the earthquake-hit country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke to Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing and conveyed condolences at the loss of lives in the earthquakes.

“As a close friend and neighbour, India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour. Disaster relief material, humanitarian assistance, search & rescue teams are being expeditiously dispatched to the affected areas as part of #OperationBrahma,” PM Modi posted on X.

Earthquake casualties so far:

– Myanmar: 1,002 dead, 2,376 injured – Thailand: 10 dead, 68 injured – China: 2 injured

Total: 1,012 dead, 2,446 injured

Most of Bangkok’s metro and light rail resumed their normal operations on Saturday, a day after massive earthquakes jolted Thailand.

However, two light rail lines continue to remain shut, according to local authorities.

External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Saturday shared the visuals of India’s humanitarian aid reaching Myanmar.

“First tranche of humanitarian aid from India has reached the Yangon Airport in Myanmar,” Jaishankar posted on X.

India has launched ‘Operation Brahma’ to provide relief packages to quake-hit Myanmar. The IAF plane carrying the relief material landed in the country today, MEA said.

China has vowed to provide humanitarian assistance to Myanmar after two earthquakes caused devastation in the country.

“We stand ready to do our best to provide emergency humanitarian assistance and support to the affected areas,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba offered condolences to Myanmar and Thailand over the devastating earthquakes.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the significant damage caused by the earthquake in central Myanmar. My heartfelt condolences go out to all those affected,” he said on Friday.

The Bangkok authorities put out a revised death toll in the earthquake that hit Thailand on Friday and lowered the number of deaths to 6. It said that 22 people were injured, and 101 were missing.

The last death toll on Friday was 10, after which the authorities said that they lowered the number as the first responders had mistaken some critical people at the rescue site as dead. When they were taken to the hospital, they could be resuscitated, the authorities said.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto offered assistance to Myanmar and Thailand, which were hit by devastating earthquakes yesterday.

He expressed condolences for the loss of lives in both countries.

“I extend my deepest condolences for the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of both countries during this difficult time. Indonesia stands ready to provide all necessary support for recovery efforts in the affected areas,” he posted on X.

Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft transported the relief package including essential supplies such as tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, and generator sets.

Medical supplies such as paracetamol, antibiotics, syringes, gloves, and bandages are also being dispatched for the support of those affected by quakes.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday said that the UN was mobilising relief for Myanmar.

Stating that the Myanmar government has sought international aid, he said that the UN team in the country is in contact to mobilise the resources in the region to support affected people.

US President Donald Trump on Friday vowed to help Myanmar after the country was struck by two massive earthquakes that also jolted Thailand.

“We will be helping,” Trump told reporters.
