Nepal, China review ties and expand cooperation after Khanal's Beijing visit

Nepal and China reviewed bilateral cooperation during Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal's Beijing visit. The talks reaffirmed the one-China policy and aimed to attract greater Chinese investment.

Nepal and China have discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral ties based on mutual friendship, goodwill and cooperation, Nepal's Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said after returning from a four-day visit to China.

Speaking to the media at Tribhuvan Airport in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Khanal said the two sides also reviewed cooperation across a range of sectors, while Nepal reiterated its commitment to the one-China policy and China reaffirmed its support for Nepal's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.

"During the visit, both sides shared common views in matters pertaining to further consolidating Nepal-China relations based on mutual friendship, goodwill and cooperation," Khanal said.

He said Nepal made it clear that it would not allow any activity directed against China from its territory. According to Khanal, China also reiterated its strong support for the Himalayan nation's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.

Beijing also expressed full support for the priorities set by Nepal in the areas of good governance and economic development, he added.

Khanal said both sides discussed expanding cooperation in sectors including connectivity, border management, energy, trade, investment, agriculture, technology transfer, information technology and digitalisation. Tourism, chemical fertiliser, petroleum, natural gas exploration and people-to-people ties also figured in the discussions, he said.

During the visit, Khanal met Liu Haixing, minister for the Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. The two sides discussed strengthening Nepal-China relations and exchanged views on expanding bilateral cooperation.

He also met Wang Huning, chairman of the Committee of the Chinese People's Consultative Conference of the People's Republic of China.

The minister also took part in an investment conference hosted by the Nepalese Embassy in Beijing, where he held discussions with Chinese entrepreneurs and investors. Khanal invited investors to Nepal for mutual economic growth and to build a new chapter of prosperity. During the interaction, he said the Nepal government was committed to creating an atmosphere friendly to foreign investment and the business community.

Overall, Khanal said his visit focused on reinforcing Nepal-China ties, expanding cooperation in multiple sectors and encouraging greater Chinese investment in Nepal.
