Nepal flood toll reaches 1,295 as two men are rescued after nine days

Nepal's death toll from flash floods rose to 1,295 on Friday as more bodies were recovered from affected areas. On the same day, two men were rescued alive from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower project, nine days after they were trapped by a flash flood in central Nepal.

The developments came as the Nepal government announced a special relief package for businesses hit by the devastating Bhotekoshi floods and began work on relocating destroyed settlements. Separately, families of American nationals missing after the floods wrote to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, seeking an expansion of rescue operations to trace their relatives.

The two men were rescued from the tunnel on Friday after a flash flood tore through the Trishuli River corridor. One of the rescued men said he kept chanting the "Hare Krishna" mantra while he was trapped, hoping to be rescued. He was brought out on Krishna Janmashtami.

Authorities said the number of deaths from the floods increased to 1,295 after more bodies were found in the affected areas.

The government said businesses affected by the Bhotekoshi floods would get concessions, loan restructuring and cheaper credit under a special relief package. Authorities have also started the process of relocating settlements destroyed in the disaster.

In the United States, families of American nationals who went missing after the catastrophic flash floods in Nepal wrote to Rubio and asked for rescue operations to be expanded to help trace their relatives.

The latest developments underline the scale of the flood disaster in Nepal, where the death toll has continued to rise even as rescue efforts, relief measures and searches for the missing remain under way.
