Nationwide protests in France against spending cuts resumed in France as thousands of people took to the streets in more than 200 towns and cities to condemn spending cuts and demand higher taxes on the rich.
Thousands of workers, retirees and students marched from Place d’Italie in Paris on Thursday afternoon. The Eiffel Tower also informed visitors in a statement that it was closed due to the strikes, the latest in a series of protests that began last month over political turmoil and budget talks, according to The Associated Press.
The French Interior Ministry said 195,000 protesters have taken to the street across the country including 24,000 in Paris. Some teachers and healthcare workers also joined the strikes, though overall turnout appeared lower than during last month’s protests.
France’s major unions have called for nationwide strikes and urged newly-appointed Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to abandon draft budget measures proposed by his predecessor (Michel Barnier), which include social welfare freezes and austerity measures that many say will further erode the purchasing power of low-paid and middle-class workers.
Lecornu was appointed as the French PM last month after the trigger for Barnier’s ouster was his 2025 budget plan including austerity measures that were unacceptable to a majority in parliament, but that he argued were necessary to stabilise France’s finances. However, Lecornu has not revealed the details of his budget plans and has yet to appoint his government ministers, which is expected soon. The deeply divided parliament will debate the budget bill at the end of this year.
