Nick Reiner appeared calm as he walked near his parents’ Brentwood home just hours before they were killed, according to newly surfaced surveillance footage that has since become central to the investigation.

The footage, obtained by US media outlet The New York Post, shows the 32-year-old walking past a local gas station shortly before midnight on Saturday. He is seen wearing blue jeans, a long-sleeve shirt and a baseball cap, and carrying a backpack. The gas station is located only a few blocks from the Reiner family home in Brentwood, Los Angeles. Investigators say the footage places Nick Reiner in the area hours before his parents were stabbed to death.

Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead at their home on Sunday afternoon. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said the couple were killed in the early morning hours of December 14. They were discovered around 3.30 pm by their daughter, Romy, who later warned police that her brother was “dangerous", according to TMZ.

Prosecutors allege that Nick Reiner fatally stabbed both his parents before fleeing the scene. He has now been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The district attorney’s office also added a special allegation for the alleged use of a knife. The charges carry a possible penalty of life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty, though prosecutors have not yet decided whether they will seek capital punishment.

According to investigators, the surveillance footage from the gas station was reviewed after detectives canvassed the neighbourhood for cameras. A source told The Post that officers requested a specific time window, and when Reiner appeared on screen, investigators identified him immediately. Authorities later clarified that the timestamp on the footage was inaccurate and was running one hour ahead of local time.

Earlier that night, Reiner and his parents had attended a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien. Sources told US media that Reiner had a loud argument with his parents during the event and was also involved in a separate confrontation with comedian Bill Hader. It remains unclear when the family left the gathering.

Reiner later checked into a hotel in Santa Monica around 4 am on Sunday, according to TMZ. Hotel staff reportedly found blood inside the room later that morning. Reiner was arrested without resistance on Sunday night near Exposition Park, close to the University of Southern California campus. He is currently being held without bail and is undergoing medical clearance, which authorities said is standard procedure.

His arraignment will be scheduled at a later date. LA-based defence attorney Alan Jackson, who has previously represented high-profile clients including Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein, has confirmed that he is representing Reiner in the case.
