US President Donald Trump on Tuesday dismissed French President Emmanuel Macron’s call for an emergency meeting in Paris with European leaders, snubbing the proposed talks as tensions rise over his push to acquire Greenland and the threat of new tariffs.

Speaking at a White House press briefing marking one year into his second term, Trump said he would not attend the meeting, suggesting Macron’s political future was uncertain. He told reporters he saw little reason to participate as the French leader “won’t be leading his country for much longer."

The snub comes a day after Trump publicly shared what appeared to be private text messages from Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Truth Social, an unusual move that has unsettled European allies and deepened the diplomatic rift.

Trump shared a message attributed to Macron that begins with “my friend" and refers to alignment on Syria and Iran. The message also shows Macron expressing confusion over Trump’s position on Greenland, an issue that has recently caused friction between Washington and several European capitals. Macron is seen proposing a possible G7-format meeting in Paris after Davos, with Ukraine, Denmark, Syria and Russia participating on the sidelines, and inviting Trump for dinner in the French capital.

The row is set to spill over into the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Trump will come face to face with European leaders who have voiced strong opposition to his Greenland ambitions and trade threats. The president is expected to address the forum on Wednesday.

Trump said he plans to use his Davos remarks to highlight what he described as the “tremendous success" of his administration over the past year. “I didn’t think we could do it this fast," he said, adding that other countries could learn from the United States on energy policy and immigration.

The White House had earlier indicated that Trump’s Davos speech would focus on affordability issues such as housing, though Trump signalled a broader pitch to global leaders.
