Tarique Rahman was sworn in as Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday, leading the country’s first elected government since the deadly 2024 uprising.
The oath was administered by Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad, instead of the traditional venue at Bangabhaban.
Dozens of Cabinet members were also sworn in during the ceremony, which was broadcast live on state television.
“I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of prime minister of the government in accordance with the law," Rahman said during the ceremony.

Earlier in the day, Rahman was elected leader of the parliamentary party by lawmakers of the Bangladesh ist Party (BNP).
Rahman, 60, led the BNP to a landslide victory in the February 12 general elections. The party secured 209 of the 297 contested seats in the 13th parliamentary elections. The BNP coalition won 212 seats overall, while the Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats. The Awami League of former premier Sheikh Hasina was barred from contesting the polls.
The vote was the first since the massive 2024 uprising that toppled Hasina’s government. An interim administration had been in charge for the past 18 months in the country of 170 million people.
Rahman’s victory marks a remarkable turnaround. He returned to Bangladesh in December after 17 years in exile in Britain. He is the son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia and former president Ziaur Rahman, and becomes Bangladesh’s first male prime minister in 35 years.
