Nalin Haley, son of Indian-American Republican leader Nikki Haley, has called on the Trump administration to limit the number of foreign students, alleging that some of them are "spies". He has also doubled down on his attack on immigration, saying foreign-born citizens in the US should not be allowed to hold public office.
Previously, Nalin Haley called for ending H-1B visas and halting legal immigration, arguing that such measures were necessary to protect American workers in a struggling economy. Nalin has faced criticism for advocating an end to mass immigration, with many pointing out that his grandfather migrated from India in 1969.
Notably, Nalin's grandfather, Ajit Singh Randhawa, who was originally from Punjab, immigrated to the US where he built a distinguished academic career.
During Nalin's podcast with right-wing commentator, Tucker Carlson, the 24-year-old said, "We need to stop and limit the number of foreign students who are coming to universities. Some of them are spies for foreign governments. But it is just that we should put our kids first."
His statement comes a week after US President Donald Trump said international students are good for the US economy.
"Naturalised citizens should not be able to hold office. Growing up in America is the biggest part of understanding the country," he added.
He demanded that only those born in the US should be eligible for elected positions.
Nalin Haley also said that dual citizenship should be eradicated.
"We should also not allow dual citizenship because that's the stupidest. You're either American or you're not. And everyone wants to make it so complicated. That's the thing that I don't like about the past generation is they're always about the rules, the process, and regulation. No, it's really," he said.
NALIN HALEY SAID H-1B VISA HURTS US WORKERS AND CALLS FOR ENDING LEGAL IMMIGRATION
In an interview with Fox News last week, Nalin stirred a row with his remarks on immigration and employment in the US.
On being asked to comment on people being surprised by his stance on H-1B visas, given that he is Indian-American and these visas are often issued to Indian nationals, he replied, "I mean, they shouldn't be, because I've seen how it's affected my friends and those around me. At the end of the day, my loyalty is to America."
In a separate interview, Nalin said the federal government should "end H-1B visas" and "stop legal immigration altogether," arguing that foreign workers are taking jobs that should go to young Americans.
"My friend group, all graduated, great degrees from great schools, it's been a year and a half, and not one of them has a job," he told London-based news website, UnHerd.
NALIN HALEY ALSO ATTACKED MEHDI HASAN OVER IMMIGRATION ISSUE
He also called for British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan to be thrown out of the US.
"No, I quite literally mean that. I'm often sarcastic, but not in this case. I mean, he hates America. If you hate America, you shouldn't be in America. Everyone wants to make it so complicated. That's the thing with the past generation. They always talk about the rules, regulations, process. No, it's simple. If you don't like America, get out," UnHerd quoted the Republican leader's son as saying.
Hasan, founder of the media company Zeteo, recently clashed with Nalin on X over the Trump administration's immigration policy. Hasan also has Indian roots; his parents migrated to the UK from Hyderabad.
