The remarks by AIADMK general secretary EPS came just hours after the actor Vijay’s father hinted that TVK is considering extending support to the Congress for Tamil Nadu polls.

AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) on Thursday hit out at the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay and slammed him for the loss of lives in a stampede at a rally held by the actor-politician in Karur in September last year. The development came months after it was speculated that EPS may have proposed an alliance with the TVK for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in order “to remove the ruling DMK government from power".

Additionally, the AIADMK general secretary’s remarks came just hours after the actor Vijay’s father, SA Chandrashekar, hinted at a major political development, stating that the TVK is considering extending support to the Congress in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Referring to the Karur stampede, in which 41 lives were claimed, EPS said, “If you are an actor (Vijay), the crowd will come to see you. There is no doubt that Vijay is the best actor, but we are the best politician."

“41 lives were lost in Karur. They (victims) were there because they wanted to see him, but you (Vijay) were not there to console them," he added.

‘TVK Wants To Give Support To Congress’: Vijay’s Father

Actor-politician Vijay’s father, SA Chandrasekhar, has appealed to the Congress to forge poll ties with his son’s TVK to get back its old glory in Tamil Nadu.

Speaking to reporters after participating in a marriage function on Wednesday, Chandrasekhar opined that TVK was considering extending support to the Congress in the upcoming Assembly election.

“Congress has a history and a legacy. Vijay is ready to give them support and get them back to their old glory. It is up to Congress to take this opportunity," he said.

EPS Rules Out Possibility Of Reinducting OPS

EPS also ruled out the possibility of reinducting O Panneerselvam (OPS) back into AIADMK after the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister signalled his willingness to return to the party, stating that a united AIADMK is the need of the hour.

OPS said he was ready to join the AIADMK in the interest of party unity and the welfare of Tamil Nadu, but added that the decision ultimately rests with the party leadership.

“I am prepared to join the AIADMK under EPS. The question is whether they will accept me," he said.

OPS and EPS engaged in a bitter power struggle following the death of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, which eventually led to a split in the party. OPS was expelled from the AIADMK in 2022 after he launched a campaign against EPS’s leadership.
