Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan has remained in solitary confinement for the past 30 days, with no meeting allowed with his lawyers or family on the 30th day, triggering protests by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders and his family outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

On Tuesday, Punjab Police used water cannons to disperse PTI workers and Imran Khan’s sisters, including Aleema Khan, who were holding a protest outside the jail demanding access to the former prime minister. Police also briefly took Khan’s sisters into custody from outside Adiala Jail before releasing them later near the Chakri Interchange on the outskirts of Islamabad.

According to PTI sources, Imran Khan last met his sister Dr Uzma Khan on December 2. Since then, no family member or lawyer has been permitted to meet him, despite repeated requests. Aleema Khan announced a sit-in outside the jail until a meeting was allowed, but the protest was broken up by police using water cannons and baton charges.

Addressing party workers during the protest, Aleema Khan urged supporters, including women and children, to disperse. “I am requesting party workers and their kids to go back because Punjab Police is hurting them with lathi charge and water cannons," she said. She also claimed that Imran Khan’s directives were clear and that the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had initiated a street movement for his release.

Meanwhile, PTI leaders and supporters chanted slogans against the government and the military leadership during the protest, escalating tensions in the area surrounding the high-security jail.

Sources within Adiala Jail, however, rejected claims of mistreatment, stating that Imran Khan’s health is “perfectly fine" and that the jail administration is taking complete care of him in accordance with jail rules. The sources added that Khan is being provided special meals and all facilities mandated under the jail manual.

Khan has been lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail since August 2023, spending more than two years in custody amid multiple legal cases. He remains incarcerated despite repeated appeals and ongoing court proceedings, keeping political tensions high across Pakistan.
