Government sources speaking to CNN-News18 on Thursday clarified that no income tax notice has been issued to Kalyan MP Shrikant Shinde, son of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, following speculation triggered by remarks made by state minister Sanjay Shirsat.
The sources explained that the notices issued recently to select individuals, including Shirsat, are part of the Computer-Assisted Scrutiny Selection (CASS) cycle for the assessment year 2024–25. “Under the CASS cycle, cases are selected for scrutiny without any human intervention and based on pre-defined risk parameters, particularly related to exemptions," one official said.
They further noted that the scrutiny process will proceed under the Faceless Assessment Scheme, and reiterated that “no notice has been issued to Shri Shrikant Shinde."
Earlier in the day, Maharashtra Minister for Social Justice Sanjay Shirsat told reporters that he had received a notice from the Income Tax Department seeking an explanation for the increase in his assets between the 2019 and 2024 assembly elections. Shirsat, an MLA from Aurangabad (West) and a member of the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, initially suggested that Shrikant Shinde had also received a notice, but later backtracked, saying he was unaware of such a development.
Shirsat said the notice followed a complaint filed with the I-T department and added that he had sought more time to respond. “I will give a proper response. Nothing wrong has been done," he said.
