UK’s BII, Denmark’s CIP unveil $300 million green energy platform in India

British Investment and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners have launched 'North Star', a $300 million renewable energy platform aimed at accelerating clean power generation in India.

The two firms will commit up to $150 million each to the platform and will invest in solar, wind, hybrid renewable energy, and battery storage projects across the country. The initiative is expected to generate more than 4 million MWh of clean energy annually while helping avoid nearly 4 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

North Star is the first investment under British Climate Partners, a £1.1 billion climate finance initiative recently launched by BII to mobilise institutional capital into climate projects across fast-growing Asian economies.

The partners said the platform is designed to address financing and execution gaps in India’s renewable energy sector, where developers often face challenges in scaling projects from development to operation.

India has set a target of achieving 500 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070, but continues to face an estimated annual climate financing gap of $160 billion through the end of the decade.

Rohit Anand, Managing Director and Head of Asia Infrastructure at BII, said the launch reflects India’s strong renewable growth potential and the role of catalytic capital in accelerating the clean energy transition.

Peter Jannik Sjøntoft, Partner at CIP’s Growth Markets Funds, said India remains one of the world’s most important renewable energy markets and that the partnership would help scale infrastructure delivery in the sector.
