Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan’s sister Noreen Niazi on Friday alleged that the family has been kept completely in the dark about Khan’s health.
“We don’t know anything. They are not telling us anything, nor are they letting anybody meet him," Niazi said, describing a situation she called unprecedented in Pakistan’s political history. According to her, even senior PTI members who had a scheduled meeting with Khan were barred from entering the facility where he is being held.
Niazi revealed that the family has not been allowed to see him for nearly a month, a restriction she described as deeply distressing. “We have not been allowed to meet him for the last four weeks… We got to know that news was circulating in India that he had been killed," she said, adding that the silence from authorities has only fuelled anxiety.
The concerns about his health came as workers of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have been staging protests and maintaining a sit-in outside Adiala Jail—where the former prime minister is currently held—as online speculation about his death spreads widely.
While prison officials have dismissed the rumours, Khan’s family and supporters insist that they have been consistently refused permission to see him, further fuelling their concerns.
Khan’s sister further alleged that law enforcement agencies have been given extraordinary powers to stop and even harm those attempting to meet the former Pakistan Prime Minister. “The Police have been ordered to stop us and, I believe, also given permission to do to us whatever they want. This has never happened in Pakistan before."
Describing what she sees as a sharp decline in civil liberties and human rights standards, Niazi claimed that the treatment of PTI supporters, including women and elderly persons, has reached alarming levels.
“No one has ever disrespected women like this, nor has anyone been oppressed this way. This is the first time in Pakistan that these people have been allowed to beat up people like there won’t be any consequences, without considering if it’s a child, an elderly person, or a woman in front of them."
Niazi stressed that the international community is aware of the situation unfolding in Pakistan, calling the moment one of the most troubling in the country’s recent political history.
