A Delta Air Lines flight traveling from Madrid to New York was forced to make an emergency landing on an island in the Atlantic Ocean due to engine trouble, causing a delay of more than 31 hours, officials confirmed on Thursday.

Delta Flight 127, an Airbus A330, with 282 passengers and 13 crew members on board, took off from Madrid on Sunday en route New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport, according to NBC News. However, the aircraft was diverted to Lajes Airport (TER) on the Portuguese island in Azores after experiencing mechanical issues with one of its engines.

Following the unscheduled landing, passengers and crew deplaned using stairs and spent the night in local hotels, where they were provided meals, according to the airline.

A replacement aircraft arrived on Monday to complete the journey. The rescheduled flight departed Lajes Airport at 9:07 p.m. GMT and landed at JFK at 10:36 p.m. ET, according to data from flight tracking service FlightAware.

The second leg of the journey lasted 5 hours and 29 minutes, finally bringing passengers to their final destination more than 31 and a half hours later than the originally scheduled arrival time of just before 3 p.m. on Sunday.

“The flight landed safely, and we sincerely apologise to our customers for their experience and delay in their travels," Delta airline said in a statement.
