A BMW struck and killed two pedestrians in New York City before fleeing the scene. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, according to police. Eyewitnesses reported that the speeding hit-and-run driver was in a black sedan. No arrests have been made so far, but the police investigation is still underway.
According to the New York Daily News, the accident happened around 4:22 a.m. local time on 3rd Avenue at 52nd Street in Sunset Park. Police officers are trying to track down the vehicle, which has been identified as a black BMW. A business owner, identified as Gregory, said, “I saw the BMW fly in front of me. I said, ‘Why the hell is this guy flying so fast?’"
Initial investigations identified the victims as two men, aged 59 and 80, who were crossing the southbound side of 3rd Avenue at the time of the incident. Authorities have confirmed that the victims were not related. Though police rushed them to the hospital, both were pronounced dead upon arrival.
The news report noted that both men were carrying empty shopping carts. Video footage viewed by the news outlet also showed several people, not just the victims, crossing the street against the traffic light.
Gregory stated that the BMW driver must have seen people crossing the road before hitting the two men. “If you’re a driver and you see eight people cross in front of you, and you see more people are crossing, you have to slow down," he said.
Another driver, who was not involved in the accident, called 911 after spotting the victims. Gregory added, “The face of one of the victims was smashed so badly. From the nose to the top of the head, it was open." He estimated that the BMW was traveling at around 70 miles per hour at the time of the crash. He added that while the driver saw the men being hit, the car did not slow down for even a second.
While the motive behind the incident has not been established, police are continuing their search for the driver. They are reviewing CCTV footage to determine the whereabouts of the suspect.
