NYC Mayoral Election 2025 Live Updates: New Yorkers are expected to elect socialist Zohran Mamdani as their next mayor on Tuesday, signalling a major shift in the city’s politics and a new challenge to US President Donald Trump.
Mamdani’s rise has captured national attention, while key governor races in Virginia and New Jersey are also being seen as important tests of the political mood across the United States, nearly ten months into Trump’s turbulent right-wing rule.
Mamdani, 34, who has campaigned on reducing living costs for ordinary residents, leads the latest AtlasIntel poll with 41 percent. Former state governor Andrew Cuomo follows on 34 percent, while Republican Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels crime patrol, stands at 24 percent — a margin that could prove decisive if his supporters swing towards Cuomo.
Voting is now underway with polls having opened at 6:00 am (4:30 pm IST) and set to close at 9:00 pm.
