Oil prices gain for fourth day US-Iran tensions escalate, threatening global supply

Oil prices rose for the fourth consecutive day as the US attacks on Iran continued in a bid to secure shipping via the Strait of Hormuz.

Brent traded around $85 a barrel after rising 12% in the prior three sessions. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate was near $80 a barrel.

The US launched further airstrikes on Iran on Wednesday. It said it had disabled an unladen oil tanker that was on its way to a part in the OPEC+ member.

Crude has surged to its highest in around a month as the escalation in tensions revives concerns over the energy supplies from the region, erasing part of the approximately 30% slump in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's near-daily strikes on Russian fuel-producing plants as well as tankers also threaten global supply.

US President Donald Trump has pledged to increase the bombardment of Iran till the latter stops attacking vessels in the key waterway and agrees to open up the energy chokepoint.

Meanwhile, Iran has showed little signs of backing down. On Wednesday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the strait would be closed till the US stops its strikes and the blockade of Iranian ports.
