Oklahoma shooting at party leaves one dead and 12 wounded

Thirteen people were shot – including one fatally – during a party at an Oklahoma venue early on Saturday, according to police.

The violence in south-west Oklahoma City was among more than 410 mass shootings in the US so far this year, according to statistics from the Gun Violence Archive. The non-partisan archive defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more victims are wounded or killed.

Such a high rate of mass shootings has prompted many to call on the federal government to provide more substantial gun control, but Congress has largely been unable or unwilling to heed those pleas.

A disturbance led to multiple shots being fired inside and outside the private venue in question around 12.30am Saturday, Capt Valerie Littlejohn of the Oklahoma City police department said in an email.

Littlejohn could not immediately provide information about the victims other than that at least two were in critical condition at a hospital.

Suspects have not yet been identified, but several people were detained after the shooting and investigators were interviewing witnesses, Littlejohn said.
