West Asia Conflict: Zayed Airport in the UAE’s Abu Dhabi and Dubai Airport, the world’s busiest for international traffic, suffered damages following overnight Iranian attack across the Gulf states, authorities said.

Many flights in and out of the Middle East have been cancelled due to US missile attacks on Iran and subsequent counter strikes targeting American bases in the region. As per airport authorities, one Asian national was killed and seven others were injured at Abu Dhabi airport, while four injures were reported at Dubai airport.

Videos showed panicked passengers running along concourses as smoke spread through the airports, as water triggered by smoke alarms collected on the floor.

One Dead At Abu Dhabi Airport

Abu Dhabi airport stated that the incident took place when a drone that targeted Zayed Airport was intercepted. The interception led to falling debris which claimed a life and caused damage to the terminal.

“Authorities in Abu Dhabi are responding to an incident resulting from the interception of a drone that targeted Zayed Airport. The interception led to falling debris, which resulted in one fatality of an Asian national and seven injuries," the airport said in a post on X.

PV Sindhu Stranded At Dubai Airport

Two-time Olympic medallist shuttler PV Sindhu has been stranded in Dubai for over eight hours now, due to the indefinite cancellation of flights in the region following disruptions to Gulf airspace from missiles.

Sindhu was en route to Birmingham for the All England Championships, all set to start on Tuesday, with Dubai as her transit stop, when airport operations were suspended.

Sindhu shared a video from the airport on Instagram, capturing passengers waiting amid uncertainty. The message on the clip was stark: all flights had been suspended until further notice.

Flights Cancelled, Passengers Stranded

America and Israel’s attack on Iran disrupted flights across the Middle East and beyond as countries around the region closed their airspace and three of the key airports that connect Europe, Africa and the west to Asia halted operations.

Hundreds of thousands of travellers were either stranded or diverted to other airports after Israel, Qatar, UAE, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and Bahrain closed their airspace.

This led to the closure of key hub airports in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha, and the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights by major Middle Eastern airlines. The three major airlines that operate at those airports – Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad – typically have about 90,000 passengers per day passing through those hubs and even more travellers headed to destinations in the Middle East, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Dubai Airport is the world’s busiest airport for international flights.
