Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman is likely to visit India next week and hold meeting with the government officials, news agency Reuters reported citing three sources.
Altman has scheduled his visit to New Delhi for February 5, the report said, adding that his schedule is yet not finalised and his plans are subject to change.
This comes as a global tech market downturn was set off this week following the rise of Chinese AI competitor DeepSeek. Its AI Assistant has surpassed ChatGPT to claim the top spot among free apps on Apple’s App Store in the United States.
OpenAI’s Legal Challenges In India
Meanwhile, OpenAI is also facing legal challenges in India.
However, OpenAI, IT Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office have yet not responded to requests for comment, Reuters reported.
According to OpenAI, India is the second-largest market by the number of the users of the company after the United States. Altman had last visited India in 2023 when he called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital and discussed the potential of artificial intelligence in boosting India’s tech ecosystem
However, since then, OpenAI has faced various legal challenges in India as a lawsuit against it was filed last year, claiming breaches of copyright after news agency ANI challenged it in a court in Delhi.
Several media outlets owned by industrialists Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, along with book publishers have also joined the case.
OpenAI has responded to such cases, stating that the company only uses data that is publicly available and in a manner protected by fair use of principles. It claimed that the Indian courts have no jurisdiction to hear the case.
