In a blow to Donald Trump's presidential campaign, more than 200 Republicans who previously worked for ex-President George W Bush, the 43rd US President, have endorsed Democrat and current Vice President Kamala Harris for America's top job instead of their own party candidate, Donald Trump. The group of Republican officials called Trump's "chaotic" leadership and warned that his re-election "would be a disaster for our nation".

The endorsement of Republican officials for the Democratic candidate comes 68 days before the US presidential election scheduled for November 5, highlighting Kamala Harris's growing popularity. If she wins, Harris would become the first female President of the United States.

Kamala Harris has now secured the Democratic presidential nomination at the Democratic Convention (DNC), which was held from August 19 to 22.

The group of Republican officials, which also includes former aides to George HW Bush, the 41st US President, published an open letter urging "moderate Republicans and conservative independents" to support Harris, according to Fox News.

TRUMP'S RE-ELECTION WILL BE A DISASTER, SAY REPUBLICAN OFFICIALS

The letter was signed by nearly 240 Republican officials.

"Four years ago, President George W Bush, the late Senator John McCain, and then-Governor Mitt Romney alumni came together to warn fellow Republicans that re-electing President Trump would be a disaster for our nation. In those declarations, we stated the plain truth, each predicting that another four years of a Trump presidency would irreparably damage our beloved democracy," the letter stated.

"We reunite today, joined by new George HW Bush alumni, to reinforce our 2020 statements and, for the first time, jointly declare that we're voting for Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz this November. Of course, we have plenty of honest, ideological disagreements with Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz. That's to be expected. The alternative, however, is simply untenable," the letter continued.

The signatories described Trump's leadership as "chaotic" and implied he wants to advance the goals of Project 2025, a Republican blueprint for a potential Grand Old Party (GOP) administration.

In response, Trump Campaign Communications Director Steven Cheung called the letter "hilarious" and stated that "nobody knows who these people are".

"It's hilarious because nobody knows who these people are. They would rather see the country burn down than see President Trump successfully return to the White House to Make America Great Again," Cheung said, reported Fox News.
