Pakistan books Imran Khan's sister over remarks on India conflict

Pakistan's anti-cybercrime body has registered an FIR against Noreen Niazi, sister of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, for allegedly "belittling the country's armed forces" in remarks about last year's four-day conflict with India, according to an official. The case comes nearly 10 days after the Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) summoned her, accusing her of sharing "false, offensive and inflammatory" content on social media to defame state institutions and spread "fake narratives".

An official told PTI on Wednesday that the NCCIA in Islamabad registered the case against Niazi under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). He said the FIR was registered on Tuesday under Sections 20 and 26-A of PECA. According to the FIR, Niazi made false and baseless allegations against Pakistan and its armed forces.

The FIR said, "Noreen Niazi attempted to undermine public confidence in the state and create panic among the people. She disseminated false, provocative, insulting and threatening content and conducted a systematic propaganda campaign against state and security institutions." The NCCIA had earlier issued summons to Niazi on July 18.

In an interview that was widely circulated on social media, Niazi claimed that the India-Pakistan military confrontation in May 2025 was the result of collusion between Pakistan's military leadership and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and was orchestrated to improve the image of the armed forces. She also sought to belittle the Pakistani armed forces' response to India in the four-day conflict triggered by the Pahalgam terror attack.

Niazi further claimed, without offering evidence, that India did not escalate the conflict because Pakistan was moving towards recognising Israel and that the episode was aimed at helping Islamabad enter the Abraham Accords. Pakistan does not recognise Israel and has no diplomatic relations with it. The Abraham Accords are a set of agreements brokered by the US in 2020 that established diplomatic, economic and security ties between Israel and the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco. In the interview, Niazi said, "What do you think? ... India, which is a big country, was not in position to respond to Pakistan when it attacked on May 10? It could have but India deliberately refrained from giving a strong response because of some understanding."

The FIR against Niazi, filed under PECA, centres on her interview remarks on last year's conflict with India, after the NCCIA had first summoned her over alleged online content targeting state institutions.
