Pakistan minister meets Iran FM in Tehran as US-Iran mediation efforts continue

Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Tuesday amid efforts to end the ongoing US-Iran conflict, according to Iranian media.

Naqvi travelled to the Iranian capital for discussions on bilateral ties and issues of mutual interest, diplomatic sources told Iran's official news agency IRNA. Pakistani and Iranian authorities have not shared details of the meeting so far.

Later in the day, IRNA posted photographs of Naqvi's meeting with Araghchi on X. The visit came a month after Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni travelled to Islamabad for talks with his Pakistani counterpart.

Pakistan, with support from Gulf countries such as Qatar, has been trying to mediate between the US and Iran. The conflict, however, has continued for a range of reasons, with the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz seen as the main issue at this stage. The waterway, through which about a fifth of the world's energy supplies passed in normal times, has effectively been blocked since February 28, when the US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran, leading to retaliatory strikes.

In June, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding that opened a 60-day window for further talks aimed at restoring peace. Pakistan also signed the document as a guarantor. A summit was later held in Switzerland after the interim agreement was signed, but the talks collapsed last month as tensions rose again after both the US and Iran resumed military strikes.

Naqvi's visit to Tehran took place against this backdrop, with the meeting focusing on bilateral ties and issues of mutual interest as efforts to ease the US-Iran conflict continue.
