A day after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire, government sources told CNN-News18 that it was Pakistan who went to the United States for help and told them that they would stop after after launched a strong retaliation on Pakistani airbases as part of Operation Sindoor.
The source also made it clear that America played no role in brokering the ceasefire.
Speaking more on the sequence of events, the sources said Pakistan first reached out to India at 1 PM on May 10, just hours after India’s air strikes on Pakistani airbases. India responded at 3:35 PM, once its Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) was available.
The government also clarified that US President Donald Trump was not kept in the loop about the ceasefire talks. “India did not inform Trump about the understanding with Pakistan, and Trump made his announcement without consulting India," the source said.
The turning point, the sources said, came after India launched a strong retaliation on Pakistani airbases as part of Operation Sindoor following the Pahalgam terror attack. “After we hit them hard, they went crying to the Americans," the source remarked.
US Senator Marco Rubio reportedly spoke to Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir, and then to India’s External Affairs Minister, saying, “The Pakistanis are willing to stop firing. Are you?" India replied that if Pakistan stopped, India would too.
On Saturday, Trump had announced that India and Pakistan agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire" after what he described as a “long night" of talks. Soon after, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that both sides had agreed through their DGMOs to cease all military action—on land, air and sea—starting 5 PM IST on Saturday.
Tensions had reached a peak following India’s precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians.
