Pakistani military spokesperson Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry recently echoed hate-filled sentiments against India, similar to those expressed by terrorist Hafiz Saeed in the past.
Hafiz Saeed, who is reportedly the mastermind behind the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, has a history of delivering inflammatory speeches against India and the US.
Ahmed Chaudhry was speaking at a university in Pakistan. While referring to the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) by India after the Pahalgam terror attack, he said, “If you stop our water, we’ll choke your breath" (Tum humara paani rok doge toh hm tumhra saans band kr dege).
Meanwhile, India at various instances has made it clear that ‘blood and water can’t flow together at the same time’. After the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, India announced a series of measures targeting Pakistan on April 23. The first involves holding in abeyance the Indus Water Treaty until Pakistan ceases its support for cross-border terrorism. In addition, the Integrated Check Post at the Attari border was closed immediately.
The Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank, outlines the terms for sharing and managing the Indus River and its five tributaries—Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Jhelum, and Chenab—between India and Pakistan. It also mandates regular information exchange between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Later, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting nine terror-related sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir.
