Pakistan’s defence minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Friday attempted to run away from the blame of the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 innocent people in Kashmir and called for an international investigation into the incident.

Khawaja Muhammad Asif said that the country was “ready to cooperate" with “any probe which is conducted by international inspectors," the New York Times reported on Friday.

"We do not want this war to flare up, because flaring up of this war can cause disaster for this region," said Asif, in a desperate attempt to defuse tensions with India.

The tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad escalated after the terror attack in Pahalgam killed 26 persons, mostly tourists, on April 22. The Resistance Front, a Pakistan-backed terror outfit, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Following the attack, India announced a raft of measures against Pakistan, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. New Delhi also announced the shutting down of the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari, the suspension of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme to Pakistani nationals and the scaling down of top officials at the High Commission.

Asif told the newspaper that India had used the aftermath of the militant attack as a pretext to suspend the water treaty and for domestic political purposes.

India, was taking steps to punish Pakistan "without any proof, without any investigation," he added.

"We do not want this war to flare up, because flaring up of this war can cause disaster for this region," Asif told the newspaper.

Asif disputed that allegation in the interview. He said Lashkar-e-Taiba was “defunct" and had no ability to plan or conduct attacks from Pakistan-controlled territory.

"They don’t have any setup in Pakistan," he said, according to the newspaper.

"Those people, whatever is left of them, they are contained. Some of them are under house arrest, some of them are in custody. They are not at all active," the official said.
