A day after Pakistan said it will nominate US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, the country condemned the strikes ordered on its neighbour Iran and called a high-level security meeting on Monday.

According to government sources, Pakistan has summoned the high-level huddle. This comes even as it submitted a draft UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution, along with Russia and China, for an “immediate and unconditional" ceasefire in the Middle East.

The government sources said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has summoned the meeting of the national security committee on Monday (June 23). It is the highest civil-military panel, where matters pertaining to the Israel-Iran conflict will be discussed.

They said Pakistan Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir is likely to brief this meeting. Islamabad will also discuss the abeyance of  the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) as well as tensions with India following the ceasefire to their military standoff.

Pakistan on Sunday said Trump’s decision to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities violated international law and that diplomacy was the only way to resolve the Iran crisis.

“The unprecedented escalation of tension and violence, owing to ongoing aggression against Iran, is deeply disturbing. Any further escalation of tensions will have severely damaging implications for the region and beyond," Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, as reported by Reuters

Also on Sunday, Sharif called Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and “conveyed Pakistan’s condemnation of the US attacks", a statement from the Pakistani leader was quoted in the Reuters report.

Pakistan’s information minister and the foreign ministry did not respond to requests for comment on the apparent contradiction in the country’s positions over the weekend.

In Pakistan’s biggest city, Karachi, thousands marched in protest against the US and Israeli strikes on Iran. A large American flag with a picture of Trump on it was placed on the road for demonstrators to walk over. The protesters shouted out chants against America, Israel and Pakistan’s regional enemy India.

On Saturday (June 21), Pakistan said it was nominating Trump as “a genuine peacemaker" for his role in bringing a four-day conflict with India to an end last month. It said he had “demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship".
