After exit polls showed on Sunday that the conservative alliance led by Friedrich Merz secured victory in Germany’s national election, US President Donald Trump welcomed the outcome, saying the German people rejected policies lacking common sense.
Trump further called it a “great day" for Germany and the United States and predicted more victories ahead. Germany’s poll results signified a change in the country’s political landscape, as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved record gains and secured second place.
“Looks like the Conservative Party in Germany has won the very big and highly anticipated election. Much like the USA, the people of Germany got tired of the no common sense agenda, especially on energy and immigration, that has prevailed for so many years," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
