US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he feels “physically and mentally" the same as he did “50 years ago" as he responded to a journalist’s question about age and endurance, ahead of his 80th birthday on June 14.
Asked how he feels now compared with when he first ran for office a decade ago, Trump said he feels “great" and much the same as he did years earlier. He acknowledged that a time may come when that changes, but added, “that time hasn’t come yet."
During the interaction, Trump was also asked about surviving assassination attempts and whether he worries about his safety. He said the concern exists, but cannot be allowed to dominate his thinking. “Yes. I worry about it, but you have to put it out of your mind, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to do your job," the President said.
Trump had earlier revealed that he planned an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event at the White House on June 14 next year, the date of his 80th birthday, even though the high-profile fight had earlier been announced for July 4.
“On June 14 next year, we’re going to have a big UFC fight at the White House — right at the White House, on the grounds of the White House," Trump told a gathering of Navy sailors at the Norfolk naval base in Virginia.
He did not refer to the fact that June 14 marks his birthday or that he will turn 80 next year. Earlier this year, on his 79th birthday, Trump had marked the occasion with a military parade intended to commemorate the founding of the US Army.
Assassination Attempts On Trump
President Donald Trump survived two assassination attempts during the 2024 campaign season, incidents that significantly heightened security concerns around his public appearances. The first occurred at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, where a gunman opened fire from an elevated position. Trump sustained a minor injury to his ear before Secret Service agents swiftly neutralised the attacker. The shooting resulted in casualties among attendees and prompted an immediate review of rally security protocols.
A second attempt was thwarted months later in Florida, where a suspect was detected by the Secret Service near a location Trump was scheduled to visit. The individual was taken into custody before any shots were fired, averting another deadly incident. The back-to-back threats highlighted the persistent risks faced by political leaders and led to enhanced protective measures around Trump for the remainder of the campaign.
