Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to pay a two-day visit to the US beginning February 12 to hold wide-ranging talks with US President Donald Trump, people familiar with the matter said on Monday.

After finishing his two-day visit to Paris, Prime Minister Modi will head to Washington DC, they further added. This will be his first official visit to the US since Trump started his second term as US President.

PM Modi will be one of the few foreign leaders to visit Washington DC for one-on-one talks just weeks after Trump’s new administration took office.

The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is the latest to travel to the White House where he is expected to discuss the developments related to ongoing ceasefire in the war between Israel and Palestinian Hamas.

Donald Trump and PM Modi have exchanged pleasantries following the Republican’s election victory and return to the White House in November. The leaders also held a phone call in January after which the US President said that the PM will probably visit the White House in February.

“I had a long talk with him this morning and he’s going to be coming to the White House next month, probably in February. We have a very good relationship with India," Trump told reporters.

PM Modi said he exchanged views on pressing global issues, including the situation in West Asia and Ukraine, and reiterated commitment to work together to promote global peace, in his call with Donald Trump.

“Delighted to speak with my dear friend President Donald Trump. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security," said PM Modi in an X post, following the phone call.

The external affairs ministry, when quizzed by reporters earlier this week regarding dates of possible visit, said that the specifics were still being finalised.

The meeting also comes amid Trump’s imposition of tariffs on key trading nations and his push to curb illegal immigration. The Trump administration has discussed issues related to immigration with the Indian government.

Both leaders are also expected to discuss the state of India-US bilateral relationship and security in Indo-Pacific region as both nations are members of the Quad grouping, whose leadership summit India will hold this year.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said he held discussions with counterpart US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding issues of visas and illegal immigration and that both countries agreed to work together to resolve these issues.

The talks happened during Jaishankar visit to the US in January when the External Affairs Minister represented the Indian government at the inauguration of Donald Trump at the Trump-Vance Inauguration Committee’s invitation.

Both leaders are known to share a cordial bond and have presided over mega events in the US and in India. PM Modi and Donald Trump were seen together at the 2019 ‘Howdy Modi’ event in Texas.

India hosted the US President earlier in 2020 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Gujarat where both leaders addressed a major gathering in Ahmedabad.
