The military of Poland on Wednesday said the country’s airspace was “repeatedly" violated by drones during a Russian attack on Ukraine.

A US Federal Aviation Administration notice mentioned that four airports, including Warsaw’s main Chopin Airport, were closed, as it cited “unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security".

The Rzeszow–Jasionka Airport in Poland’s southeast, a hub for passenger and arms transfers to Ukraine, was also among the airports that had been temporarily closed, the FAA notice mentioned.

Poland also said it scrambled its own and NATO air defences to shoot down drones.

It said the military operation was ongoing and urged people to stay at home, naming the regions of Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Lublin as most at risk.

“During today’s attack by the Russian Federation aimed at targets in Ukraine, our airspace was repeatedly violated by drones," the operational command of Poland’s armed forces said in a statement on social media.

It earlier said that Polish and allied aircraft had been mobilised in response to the Russian attack.

Later, in a social media post, Poland’s Security Bureau said, “The President of the Republic of Poland is being continuously informed about the situation regarding violations of Polish airspace."

“We ask you to follow the announcements and rely on information coming from the strategic commands of the Polish Armed Forces and services," it mentioned.

“We express immense gratitude to all those involved in protecting Polish skies. We also ask everyone to remain calm," it added.

Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said Polish aircraft had “used weapons against hostile objects".

“We are in constant contact with NATO command," he added on X.

The alleged incursion comes a day after Poland’s newly elected nationalist President Karol Nawrocki warned that Russian leader Vladimir Putin was ready to invade more countries after launching his war in Ukraine.

“We do not trust Vladimir Putin’s good intentions," Nawrocki told reporters Tuesday at a press conference in Helsinki.

“We believe that Vladimir Putin is ready to also invade other countries."
