Police in Munich said officers fired shots at a suspicious person on Thursday in an area near the Israeli Consulate and a museum on the city’s Nazi-era history.

“A shooting incident took place near the Consulate General of Israel in Munich. The consulate is closed today due to the commemoration ceremony for the massacre of Munich athletes in 1972. September 5th is the anniversary of the 1972 Olympic terrorist attack when 11 Israeli athletes were attacked, taken hostage and killed. The shooter in today’s incident was neutralized by the German security forces and the incident is under their care,” Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

There was no immediate information on why the person was considered suspicious.
