Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav is under fire after he did not attend the joint session of both Houses of the state legislature. Several reports indicate that he has gone on a European trip, only weeks after the party’s poor performance in the assembly elections. His absence on Wednesday came just a day after he declared that he would play the role of a “constructive opposition".

The joint session, addressed by Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, saw all major leaders present except the Leader of the Opposition. His absence quickly became a talking point inside the House. The ruling NDA leaders criticised him for skipping an important constitutional event.

The situation became more noticeable when JD(U) MLC Neeraj Kumar was seen looking around for the RJD leader. He asked lawmakers and even media persons if they had spotted Tejashwi. “Tejashwi ko khoj rahe hain. Dekhe hain?" Kumar remarked, adding that the “temple of democracy doesn’t appear good without the leader of opposition".

Kumar further questioned whether Tejashwi was unwell, had a court matter to attend, or was simply avoiding the House due to “political embarrassment" after the election results. BJP minister Nitin Nabin also took a dig at him, saying Tejashwi had a long-standing habit of missing House proceedings. “He (Tejashwi) is hardly seen inside the House. That’s why he faced such a situation," he said.

The RJD pushed back, insisting that there was no need for politics over the matter. Party spokesperson Ejaz Ali Ahmad dismissed the criticism sharply, saying, “Neeraj Kumar shouldn’t try to become another Vasco Da Gama, always trying to ‘discover’ Tejashwi." He argued that the JD(U) leader should focus on development issues instead.

Ahmad also raised concerns about the demolition of houses belonging to poor villagers. “Instead of looking for our leader, you must tell why the government is bulldozing the houses of the poor after getting their votes with Rs 10,000?" he asked, criticising the NDA’s recent actions in the winter season.

RJD MLA Ranvijay Sahu said that Tejashwi had left Patna soon after attending the election of Speaker Prem Kumar on Tuesday. He maintained that the RJD leader had “urgent works" in Delhi before reportedly travelling further. Sahu added that during the RJD’s tenure, the government ensured night shelters for the poor, but under the NDA, “their own homes are being demolished," calling it a sign that “the PM Awas Yojana is a big failure".

Meanwhile, local Hindi reports claimed that Tejashwi had travelled to Europe with his wife and children, attending only two days of the Assembly session so far. Three days of the winter session still remain.
