A small aircraft, carrying eight passengers and two crew members, crashed in central Mexico while attempting an emergency landing on Monday. So far, seven bodies have been recovered, news agency AP reported, citing Mexico State Civil Protection Coordinator Adrián Hernández.

The crash happened in San Mateo Atenco, an industrial zone located about 5 kilometres away from Toluca airport and roughly 50 kilometres west of Mexico City. The private jet had taken off from Acapulco on the Pacific coast.

According to initial information, the aircraft appeared to be trying to land on a soccer field but struck the metal roof of a nearby industrial facility, triggering a large fire. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.

San Mateo Atenco Mayor Ana Muñiz told Milenio Television that the blaze prompted the evacuation of around 130 people from the surrounding area.
