Pakistan’s opposition leader Mehmood Achakzai on Sunday lambasted the government over what he called a “pure intelligence failure" that led to the ongoing violence in Balochistan.
Achakzai demanded accountability not only for the series of coordinated attacks from the Balochistan province, but also highlighted that the Pakistani government was responsible for the health and safety of high-profile detainees in an apparent reference to former prime minister Imran Khan.
Characterising the events in Balochistan as a “pure failure" of Pakistan’s intelligence agencies, he alleged a troubling lack of accountability among high-ranking officials despite the scale of the violence. He said the country’s intelligence agencies are not so incompetent that they would have had no prior knowledge of such a major attack.
Achakzai further said “no one is ready to accept any responsibility" for the lapse, drawing a sharp contrast with international standards of accountability. He specifically referred to the recent security breach in the United States, saying when there had been an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump, the security incharge immediately resigned but this is not the case in Pakistan.
He also said the country’s security forces are currently unprepared for the complexities of modern warfare, suggesting significant “blind spots" leave the country unable to effectively handle sophisticated, coordinated attacks. To rectify these vulnerabilities, he demanded that the issue of terrorism in Balochistan be formally addressed and discussed in Parliament.
“Balochistan coordinated attacks are a pure failure of Pakistan intelligence agencies…our security forces need to understand modern warfare," Achakzai said. “A massive incident like this happened in Balochistan, yet no one has resigned so far."
Beyond the immediate security crisis, the opposition leader stressed on Pakistan’s “absolute responsibility" for the health and safety of high-profile detainees like Imran Khan. He said because Khan is in government custody, the State is strictly accountable for his well-being. The government’s “tall claims" on his care will be discredited if his access to personal doctors were restricted, he added.
“Everyone has their own personal doctors, but if Imran Khan’s doctors were sent away, all the hot air would deflate from the balloons of the government’s tall claims," he said. “Imran Khan is not an ordinary man; he is in the custody of the government, if he even catches a cold, it is the government’s responsibility to take it seriously."
