Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the US against supplying Tomahawk missiles to neighbour Ukraine as the war inches towards it fourth year. Putin said that the response to such a missile being used to strike Russian territory will be ‘serious, if not devastating’.

“This is an attempt at escalation, but if strikes with such weapons are carried out on Russian territory, the response will be very serious, if not downright devastating. Let them think about that," Putin said.

“Dialogue is always better than confrontation or any disputes, and especially war. We have always supported the continuation of dialogue," Putin told journalists.

Over at Washington, his American counterpart Donald Trump appeared to reject any possibility that Kyiv would get its hands on the long-range, precision-guided cruise missile capable of striking targets over 1,500 km away with high accuracy.

“It’ll take a minimum of 6 months or usually a year to learn how to use them. They’re highly complex. So the only way a Tomahawk is going to be shot is if we shot it, and we’re not going to do that," Trump told reporters at the Oval Office.

“We know how to use it and we’re not going to be teaching other people," he said.

Trump also imposed the latest US sanctions targeting two major oil firms were “serious", but not strong enough to significantly affect the economy.

The United States on Wednesday hit Russia’s two biggest oil producers — Rosneft and Lukoil — with sanctions, the first against Russia since US President Donald returned to office.

“They (sanctions) are serious for us, of course, that is clear. And they will have certain consequences, but they will not significantly impact our economic well-being," Putin told reporters.

He added that the sanctions were an “unfriendly act" that “does not strengthen Russia-US relations, which have only just begun to recover."
