Qualcomm will upgrade its mobile chipset lineup with the new flagship and mid-range Snapdragon Gen versions.

Qualcomm is preparing to launch another variant of their flagship SoC this month. As per several reports, the American tech company is set to launch an underclocked variant of their current flagship processor Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 along with a new 7+ Gen 3 on March 18. The chipset is expected to be launched at a special event, themed – 'Intelligence is in the core, and there is a dragon in it'. The speculated Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 will have new AI capabilities with a slightly bumped-down performance.

The configuration of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 CPU will be nearly identical to the 8 Gen 3. It will feature a single high-performance based on Cortex X4, four medium-performance cores based on the Cortex-A720 architecture and three efficiency cores based on Cortex-A520. There’s a slight difference in the clock speed for each core on the SoC.

The high-performance X4 core will offer a peak clock speed of 3.01GHz which is slower than the 3.30Ghz on the 8 Gen 3. The medium cores will be clocked down from 3.25GHz to 2.61GHz and the small cores will be dialed down to 1.84GHz compared to 2.27GHz. Apart from the difference in clock speeds, the 8s Gen 3 is also expected to feature a new, integrated AI processor.

Regarding network connectivity and image processing, the performance will likely be the same in these departments. However, due to a lower clock speed, the battery life might see a noticeable improvement thanks to better power efficiency.

Talking about the graphical duties, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 has also been speculated to have a new GPU. The Adreno 735 graphics chip will replace the Adreno 750 GPU on the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. The Adreno 735 will have lower clock speeds, which means that games and other 3D applications might see a slight performance hit.

Qualcomm is also expected to announce a new mid-tier chipset in the same event, reportedly the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3. This SoC will likely be used in the premium mid-range smartphone segment. The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 could house the flagship-grade Adreno 732 GPU to deliver an incredibly good gaming experience without breaking the bank.

With the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 and 7+ Gen 3 speculated to launch in the first quarter of 2024, several upcoming smartphones could house the said Qualcomm CPU. Some potential devices to be powered by the new SoCs are OnePlus Ace 3V, Realme GT Neo, Redmi Note 13 Turbo, Xiaomi Civi 4, Vivo Pad 3.
