Russia on Monday denied Romania’s claim of Moscow violating its airspace. The Russian embassy in Romania said the drone incursion in Romanian airspace was a “provocation" by Ukraine.
The statement comes after Romania’s Ministry of Defence summoned Moscow’s envoy.
As per a report by AFP, Ambassador Vladimir Lipayev said Romania’s allegation that Russia was responsible for the intrusion was “unfounded".
“All the facts lead one to believe that it was a deliberate provocation by the Kyiv regime", read a statement issued by the Russian embassy on late Sunday. The statement added that Romania had failed to “concretely and convincingly respond" to questions posed by Russia regarding the incident.
Romania Condemns Russia for Violating Airspace
On Sunday (local time), Romania’s Ministry of Defence condemned Russia for violating its airspace during an attack on Ukraine. In an official statement, the ministry called this action of Russia a new challenge to the regional security and stability in the Black Sea area.
It also alleged that such incidents demonstrated Russia’s “lack of respect" for international law.
“Such incidents demonstrate the Russian Federation’s lack of respect for the norms of international law and endanger not only the Romanian citizens’ safety, but also NATO’s collective security," the statement read. “Romania remains firmly committed to fulfilling its commitments as a member state of the Alliance and will continue to closely work with its partners and allies to monitor and defend the national airspace," it added.
Romania is the second NATO alliance, after Poland, that claimed a breach by Russia. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported in a post to X that defenses “reached the highest state of readiness" in response to “the threat posed by Russian drones operating over Ukraine near the border with Poland."
